Falling in love with typography

This Pinterest is one addictive thingy I tell you. Neither orkut nor facebook could do this to me. Not even farmville. Umm. I am lying about the farmville part but whatever! I am totally drooling over Pinterest. I love the fonts used in Pinterest as well. See, I am crazy.

And that’s how typography happened. I am a self proclaimed font fan. I am also one of those whose “rough notes” was and continues to be filled with doodles and quotations in different letterings. Just that I now choose to do it on K’s files and he practically locks his stuff inside drawers. Living with me isn’t exactly easy.

Anyways.

Wikipedia may tell you a lot about typography but to me it is the art of writing letters or numerals or any character creatively and making it look appealing and beautiful. Pinterest has a lot of it!

There was this time when I used to spend hours deciding the fonts on my presentation or even copy fonts  from microsoft as headings/sub-headings in written assignments. I somehow used to feel that fonts and letterings spoke about a person. I am not talking of handwriting analysis and the like per se but fonts often depicted my mood and emphasis.

When pinterest and a few blogs talked of typography, I got curiouser and curiouser. I have a cursive writing style thanks to the strict english teachers who always wanted a tail before everything. I experiment with it but there is an ocean of letter styles waiting to be explored.

No prizes for guessing what I am upto since 2 days.

All these are copied from pinterest and not my own creations. But even copying them gives me a high and a whole sack of ideas of what to do with my letters. These are probably stitching patterns. They’d look good on a handkerchief or on the cover of a personal diary, wouldn’t they? Pretty vintage, I’d say! I am not too big on haberdashery yet and so will give that a pass for now.

These aren’t perfect. But that’s exactly why I like them. I should cut down on the jagged lines though.

There are some cheeky ones as well like,

Uh oh! I think these are enormous because I scanned them. Sowwie!

I had a whale of a time making these. More alphabets beckon. Let me go attend to them. Are you font crazy too? Please say yes. Some kindness before Christmas that will make me feel good is much appreciated.

Merry Christmas folks. I will be singing carols with a group and enjoy the spirit in Singapore. How about you?

P.S. My vacation posts will follow soon. The number of snaps calls for some serious organization.

These would have been better had multiple alphabets combined to form a word. Or a sentence. It’s good to look at a designer sentence.

I like the old English font that they use on invitations, etc. They are majestic. I found out that a similar font is available on Inkscape. I intend to use it for writing quotes or making pictures in the future.

The fonts you have shown above, are beautiful but complex. Is it possible to bring them to a standard, so that they can be used and recognized by computers/browsers, etc. and people can start writing using them? A minimized flowery-font version, perhaps?

      Hi DI!

I am just beginning to practise letters and I think it would look too cluttered as a sentence with so many flowers. There are definitely less flowery versions that are super elegant 🙂
There are many free fonts available online. Many of the free ones are gross but there’s plenty worth keeping. I plan to share more in the coming days. Tell me if you find them else I can help 🙂
I have the same interest – to make quotes using these fonts!

These are really good. I used to do alphabets with human figures. A cute boy and a girl. My favourite was O. I used to make an umbrella, its top facing the reader. And from the bottom, you could see 2 pair of legs. One of the girl’s legs was a little up from the ground. 🙂

      Hey Amit!

WOW! That sounds super cute. I would love to see them. Do you have any copies. I was ogling at your bollyood sketches last night. You are super good 🙂
That O is kinda stuck in my mind now 🙂
      Thankee!

Wow Kismi!!! Those alphabets look super good to me (I love embroidery.. one day I would sure use these to stitch something up). Typography was not one of my interests.. but I am sure I will be drawn to it now that you showed me. I have always experimented with fonts. Even now, when I get bored during work, I try to change my outlook templates and fonts.. just like that, which gives me so much happiness 😀 Right from childhood, I loved writing different styles of alphabets.. partly because my handwriting was so bad until 4th grade. It improved for good later, but I am no good at cursive handwriting even now. Dad had given me some calligraphy pens, that I treasured for many many years.. Fearing that I would break those nibs.. silly me used to try copy a calligraphy style, without using the nib/pen. I still love doing it, only that I am not spending much time there. You have given me a super idea KIsmi – Thankuuuu 🙂

Merry Christmas and Happy New year in advance to you and K 🙂

Hey Gb! 🙂 I was surethis would intrigue you 🙂
Wow, you are a font fan too! Super. I love calligraphy too and had gotten a set of nibs as a birthday wish from papa. I never used them much sadly 😦 I woudl love to get a set and try my hands on them soon.
Thank you dear. will tell K as well 🙂

Now this is so pretty and interesting 🙂

The letter V looks so pretty 😉

Calligraphy interests me more than typography. I remember, during school, we used to slightly take apart ink pen nibs and write the names in certificates. I was so delighted by the beautiful handwriting by our seniors than doing a course in calligraphy became one of my wish 🙂

I love Pinterest. Even if I am not able to implement the awesome ideas, I mark them for future reference 😀

    • kismitoffeebar · December 21, 2012

hehe ya ya V looks pretty definitely! 🙂
Calligraphy is a wonderful art form too. I love it as well. Like i told Gb, I never got to use teh calligraphy nib set that I got with so much enthusiasm after literally pulling papa’s fingers 😛
I used to ogle at certificates though we had a lot of cursive hapening on certificates as well 😛
      Pinterest rules! 🙂

i never knew about these things.. though they are creative, they look very feminine.. i might nvr use them.. but, Bunty might find it really interesting.. :D..

    • kismitoffeebar · December 21, 2012

hehe yeah! They do look feminine – maybe it’s the flowers and the curves? 😛
Bunty will spend a long time pondering where do flowers really come from!

  8. Jas · December 22, 2012

Never the alphabets looked so interesting. 🙂 I need to show this to my son. He will love it though it can lead to a whole ABCD in these fonts in his exam paper 😛

    • kismitoffeebar · December 22, 2012

hehe yeah he would wonder whether flowers grow on alphabets or plants! 😛
But yes, am sure the kid will be more amused 🙂

  9. The Girl Next Door · December 22, 2012

Love the way those alphabets look! So lovely! 🙂
I love experimenting with the different kinds of fonts while I write something on my computer. I haven’t ever tried them out on paper.

    • kismitoffeebar · December 22, 2012

🙂 Try them out sometime if you feel like. I feel good doing it and love the way you get new ideas as you try them out as well 🙂

I love fonts, typography, calligraphy… the works. And since part of my work deals with page design and layout I can indulge in this love. But only upto a certain point as I work in an academic institution. So while I do bring our proper reports in proper fonts, I always fantasise about reports with lively fonts and layout other than the standard one prescribed by my workplace.

    And I loved the alligator A 🙂

    • kismitoffeebar · December 26, 2012

Welcome here Sudhagee – so happy to see you here! 🙂
Wow! You can indulge in this love – how awesome is that?! I can relate to your fantasy. I often do that too 🙂

Alligator A is one of my favourites too!
